Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Just a quick update...............

We decided to stay an extra day in Roswell.

No, we didn't go look for more Aliens.

As most of you know, we are not early risers.  This morning, we sort of got off to a slow start, so we decided to spend the entire day (or whatever was left of it) at Carlsbad Caverns.

We arrive about 1:30, so we were to late to go on a Ranger Guided Tour.  But, there are two areas of the cave that are self guided, so guess what we did....?

Actually, we had a "BLAST".  The cave, which takes about 2 hours to walk through, was almost entirely empty of other people.  We only came across 2 other couples during our trip.  The cave has many huge rooms, with caverns and tunnels going off in all direction.  It was nice to have a paved walkway all through the two hour tour.

Pictures will not do this cave justice, but here are a few anyway.

The stairs, in the above photo, is how you entered and departed the cave when it first opened in 1926.  (You can click on the photo to enlarge it.)  Today there is an elevator that will take you down the 750 feet, and back up.  Also, you can walk through the main cave entrance, which we did, and down the path to the main part of the cave.  When it came time to leave, we opted to take the elevator out.

So, tomorrow we will be on our way South, and still plan to be in Austin Texas for the weekend.

Thanks for check in on us.

Steve and Roberta
